Accountability... not sexy word

Accountability... not sexy word

February 18, 20262 min read

The beginning of a new year brings motivation and often big intentions for change. But the reality is, getting where you want to be is much harder without accountability guiding you along the way.

So what does accountability actually mean?

For many of us, if something isn’t written down, scheduled or tracked, it simply doesn’t happen. A calendar, reminders or structured plan isn’t just organisation, it’s a powerful form of accountability that helps turn intention into action.

Yet when it comes to our health and fitness, we often treat it differently. We rely on motivation instead of structure.

What Accountability Really Looks Like

Accountability in health and fitness means taking ownership of your journey:

  • How often you train

  • The food choices you make

  • Your sleep habits

  • How consistently you show up for yourself

These things don’t improve just by thinking about them. They improve through planning and action.

Research shows:

  • Having an idea in your head gives you about a 10% chance of following through.

  • Planning how you’ll do it increases that to around 50%.

  • Telling someone raises it to 65%.

  • Creating specific accountability with another person or system can push success rates up to 95%.

Setting Yourself Up for Success This Year

So if you want this year to be different, structure is key.

Training

  • Book your sessions and schedule them into your day as non-negotiable appointments - that means, in the diary/calendar, whatever is your go to place for important appointments.

  • Track your STRONG sessions using our Training App. Tracked data gives you last week's baseline, keeping you accountable during your next session.

Nutrition

  • Set aside dedicated time each week to plan your meals and prepare ahead where possible.

  • Decide what you’re eating before you’re hungry or busy. Planning removes decision fatigue and helps you stay consistent.

  • Treat nutrition planning like any other important appointment. If it’s scheduled, it gets done.

Lifestyle Habits (Sleep, Movement, Recovery)

  • Set reminders for daily habits that support your health - eg. water intake, steps, sleep - whatever habits you want to commit to

  • Use apps that allow you to tick off completed tasks.

  • Partner with someone who shares similar goals to increase accountability - get that gym buddy and keep each other accountable to your habits.

Remember, we are only 10% likely to follow through with something by thinking about it. Plan, write it down, share it out to others to increase your chances of success and keeping that accountability to yourself high!
