The next two weeks we'll be squashing some of the most common training & nutrition misconceptions that might be holding you back from getting the most out of your journey.
1. “Lifting Weights Will Make Me Bulky”
This one’s a classic. Many women worry that strength training will have them looking like Mrs. Arnie overnight. The truth? It takes years of consistent training, strict nutrition, and often specific hormonal support to build serious muscle mass. Women naturally have lower testosterone levels than men, which means building big muscles doesn't happen by accident. Strength training will help you feel strong, lean, and healthy, not bulky.
2. “You Need to Train Every Day”
More isn’t always better. While staying active daily is important, strength and conditioning sessions 3–4 times per week are usually ideal for most people. Rest and recovery are just as crucial as training and they’re where the magic (aka results) happens. On your rest days, keep it light with a walk, stretching, or even some yoga!
3. “Do 100 Sit-Ups and Say Goodbye to Belly Fat!”
Also known as spot reduction, this myth suggests that doing exercises for a certain body part (like crunches for belly fat) will burn fat in that area. Unfortunately, that’s not how our bodies work. Where we store and lose fat is largely influenced by genetics, age, and gender.
4. If You're Sore, It Means You Had a Good Workout”
DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is common, especially when you try something new but it’s not the determinant for a “good” workout. You can have an incredibly effective session and not feel sore at all. Progress is better measured by strength gains, improved performance and how consistent you’ve been showing up.
5. “I Just Need to Do More Cardio to Lose Weight”
Not necessarily! While cardio has its place, it’s not the magic fat-loss solution it’s often made out to be. Building muscle through strength training actually helps your body burn more calories even when you’re not working out. Cardiovascular training is significantly important for our heart and overall health, but it's not a one stop answer for losing weight.
Bottom Line?
There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to fitness. The best thing you can do is keep showing up, stay curious and focus on what makes you feel strong, healthy and the best version of you!
