6 Core Habits to Staying Energised and Uplifted Through the
Cold Months
As the colder months roll in, so too can the winter blues. The shorter days, gloomy skies, and colder temperatures often make it harder to stay motivated, connected, and mentally energised. It’s totally normal to feel a little sluggish or low during this time, it’s something many of us experience. But even when the weather’s out of our control, there are simple things we can do to support our mood, energy and overall wellbeing.
So what can we control this winter?
Instead of falling into hibernation mode, let’s shift our focus to a few habits we can control, no matter what the weather’s doing. We’ve put together a list of 6 core winter habits to help boost your mood, support your body, and stay on top of your mental health during the chilly season.
1. Get natural light early in the day
With less daylight available, our bodies miss out on the natural cues that regulate mood, energy & sleep. Open the blinds as soon as you wake up, step outside with your morning coffee, or take a short walk to soak up that morning sun. Even 10 minutes of daylight can make a big difference. And DON'T let the first bit of light you see in the morning be your phone screen.
2. Warm movement counts
Staying active in winter doesn’t mean battling the cold outdoors, we’ve got the heater on and the warm vibes inside the studio! Do a quick stretch in your lounge room to get the blood flowing and then head on over to keep your body moving. Want a way to beat the winter sickness, exercise endorphins are your winter superpower.
3. Make winter comfort foods that nourish
Winter cravings are real! Try leaning into warm, wholesome meals that make you feel good and fuel you well. Think veggie-packed soups, slow-cooked broths, roasted veggies, or homemade desserts. Aim for 2-3 veggie servings a day to keep your energy up and immune system strong.
4. Stay socially connected
It’s tempting to stay home and hibernate, but a quick check-in with a friend, whether it’s a phone call, a coffee date, or a training buddy catch-up 😉 can really brighten your day. Human connection is a powerful antidote to the winter slump.
5. Create cosy moments for your mind
Take time to slow down and enjoy a mindful moment each day. Light a candle, sip tea, read a chapter of a book, journal, or just sit quietly under a blanket for a few minutes. These pauses give your mind a chance to reset.
6. Keep something to look forward to
Winter can feel long, so it helps to sprinkle in small things that spark joy. Book a massage, plan a girls' night, mark gym event on your calendar, or set a mini goal for yourself. Having little pockets of excitement ahead can boost your motivation.
Start to weave these habits into your week. These small shifts can have a big impact on how you feel through winter. Stay warm, stay connected, and be kind to yourself 💛
